What is Fungicide?
Fungicide is a treatment that helps stop or slow the spread of lawn diseases caused by fungal pathogens. These treatments work by targeting the fungus at the source, halting its growth before it can do more damage. Fungicides work best preventively, but if caught early, we can control them fast.
Common Causes of Lawn Disease
In no way does lawn disease mean you’ve done something wrong; unfortunately, the conditions were right for it to take hold. Here’s what usually sets the stage for those problems:
- There’s a buildup of fungal pathogens already present in your grass.
- You have warm-season grass, and the weather changes to cooler temperatures.
- You have cool-season grass, and the weather changes to warmer temperatures.
- You over-watered your grass, or there’s been excessive rainfall.
- You’re watering the lawn at the wrong time of the day. You never want to water in the evening.
- It’s overcast for an extended period, or your grass doesn’t get enough sunlight in shaded areas.
Types of Lawn Diseases
The most common lawn diseases that affect lawns across the Southeast include the following:
- Brown patch looks like circular patches of brown grass with a possible green center, often forming a smoke ring shape. It’s most common in hot, humid weather.
- Dollar spot looks like small, silver dollar-sized tan spots with reddish borders and hourglass-shaped lesions on blades. It appears on warm days with cool, humid nights.
- Gray leaf spot causes leaf infections that can progress into the crown area, resulting in the death of individual plants. Moderate outbreaks of gray leaf spot result in clusters of thin, off-colored turf. Most common in late summer when temps and humidity are really high and can kill turf fast. Also, it’s more common in areas with poor air circulation and/or drainage.
- Pythium blight can affect fescue grass, particularly in warm, humid conditions. It’s known for causing patches on the turf surface, starting as small, circular, sunken areas that can expand. The disease is exacerbated by wet conditions, overwatering, and poor drainage.
How We Treat Lawn & Plant Diseases
We don’t have a blanket approach; we carefully evaluate your lawn and tailor our game plan to your circumstances. You can generally expect some of the following and more:
- We’ll treat the active fungus: We apply targeted fungicides to stop the spread of disease and prevent it from taking over more of your grass. Timing is key, and we base our treatments on inspection and scientific analysis.
- We’ll reseed with disease-resistant grass varieties: To prevent future outbreaks, we like to overseed with proven grass varieties that are more resilient against disease, insects, and weeds.
- We treat pests and weeds: Insects like grubs and aggressive weeds like crabgrass can stress your lawn and invite disease. We’ll knock them out and apply preventative solutions to keep your turf strong.
- We’ll loosen up compacted soil: Compacted soil limits airflow and water absorption, enabling fungal growth. Our core aeration service opens up your soil so roots can breathe and thrive.
- We properly fertilize your lawn: Any grass needs balanced nutrients. Our slow-release fertilizers are formulated to help your grass grow thick, green, and disease-resistant.
- We support your lawn with smart lawn care practices: We’ll give you expert recommendations on greenery height, watering schedules, and drainage improvements to reinforce the treatments we apply.
Prevent Lawn Disease with Professional Lawn Care
Intuitively, you’d want to combat lawn disease and stop it before it starts. Our lawn care program does just that. Our program includes the following and more:
- Weed control removes stressors that weaken turf and make it more vulnerable to disease.
- Fertilization strengthens your lawn from the roots up to build long-term resilience against pests, stress, and disease.
We also offer aeration if needed. Aeration breaks up compacted soil, allowing your lawn to breathe and reducing the conditions where fungi thrive.
